Babies and Books

Babies are born ready to learn about the world around them. At birth, their brains have billions of nerve cells or neurons. From the very beginning, connections – or synapses – between these cells form as the babies experience things around them, and become attached to those close to them. The stimulation, we, as caregivers, give to our babies helps to develop and increase these crucial connections in their brains.

Every time you talk or sing to your baby, read to your child, or respond to his sounds, the research now tells us that you are developing important brain connections that will have lasting importance on the development of language. You are beginning the process of helping your child become a reader, by helping her to learn and to love language and books.

Sharing a book with your baby everyday is one of the best things you can do for them. Studies show that this simple interaction helps sets the stage for a love of reading, language, and capacity for literacy skills. It also promotes bonding between you and your child.

One Response to “Babies and Books”

  1. The best gift you can give your baby or child this holiday season, or any other time of year, is the gift of language – sing, talk, read – enjoy the bond.
