Books 4 Babies was sponsored locally in Campbell River for over 15 years.  Three years ago Books for BC Babies began working with communities to spread the word of literacy.  Books for BC Babies provided bags and resources to every new baby born in British Columbia.  Literacy Now took charge of stuffing the bags, delivering them to the Health Unit and arranging for them to be distributed to new moms by a Public Health Nurse.   Although Books for BC Babies has lost a majority of it’s funding the program is still alive and kicking. Books for BC Babies has supplied our community with bags and music CD’s. Funding is needed for good quality storybooks for babies and parent material for 350 bags for babies in Campbell River.

“Books for Babies program is one of several initiatives aimed at making British Columbia the most literate jurisdiction in North America by 2010 and seeks to improve community literacy levels using a partnership model.

Research clearly shows the importance of talking, singing and reading to newborn babies. The Books for BC Babies program aims to create a positive association with books and the library for babies and their parents. The public library provides parents with an opportunity to learn language-rich activities that they can do with their newborns, shows them the range of library materials they have access to, teaches them how to choose books for their baby and provides them with physical space and programs where they and their babies can socialize with other babies and caregivers.” ( www.books4babies.bclibrary.ca/)

Sharing a book with your baby everyday is one of the best things you can do for them. It also promotes bonding between you and your child.

The book for the baby is great but the message to parents to read early, read often is the most important message here. It is through hearing language that babies will learn language and find learning to read easier when they reach school age.
