The Success By 6 Community Council of Partners would like to congratulate the many partners we have established for striving to create a family-friendly community. In recent times, Success By 6 has:
Worked on creating the Gathering Place, a support centre for our most at risk families
- Supported community Health Fairs where children are screened before entering school
-
Supported National Child Day and Children’s Festival (July 1st) events
- Co-sponsored professional development activities for early learning community workers
- Supported the Green BackPack Initiative so every child in the community would have books to take home
- Supported the Family Friendly Business Award
- Had a voice in the planning stages of the Spirit Square, designing it with the family in mind
- Supported the Healthy Eating Project for Young Moms
- Conducted a Transportation Bus Pass Study/Research Project
- Developed the Campbell River Family Network Website – a resource for families (www.crfamilynetwork.ca)
- Supported Family Coordinator on Cortes Island
- Supported the Parents and Tots Program on Quadra Island
- Supported the Mother Goose Program in Gold River
Collectively these types of non-traditional arrangements have made an enormous difference in our local capacity to support young children and their families. These collaborations are an integral part of preventing crime, poverty and other issues which are linked to the 1 in 4 at risk children in our community.
“Development during the 0 to 5 years has lifelong implications for health,
well-being, and competence….and much of this development is exceedingly
difficult, if not impossible, to reverse later in life.” Source: Dr. Clyde Hertzman, University of British Columbia
We are requesting for the community to advocate for maintaining Success By 6 funding. The funding for Success By 6 and other early years programs may very well be in jeopardy during these economic difficulties and we would appreciate any support through lobbying the provincial government to keep these initiatives in place.
Recent studies suggest that for every $1 invested on quality care and early learning at-risk chidren can mean up tot $13 in savings in later social costs including crime, health care and employability. –The Hon. Margaret Morrie McCain, Co-author of The Early Years Study: Reversing the Real Brain Drain, and the Early Years Study 2: Putting Science into Action, Council of Early Child Development.)
